The 7 Nadi Dosha Cancellation Conditions

Nadi dosha is cancelled when any one of these seven conditions applies to the couple's charts. When it is cancelled, the 8-point penalty does not apply. The score should be read as if those 8 points were intact.

This matters because Nadi carries the single highest weight in the Ashtakoot system. A score of 19/36 might actually represent 27/36 of compatibility once Nadi cancellation is confirmed. That is the difference between a rejected match and an approved one.

Condition 1: Same nakshatra, different pada

Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four padas (quarters). If both partners are born under the same nakshatra but in different padas, Nadi dosha is cancelled. This is the most commonly applied condition in standard matching.

Example: partner one is in Rohini pada 1, partner two is in Rohini pada 3. Same nakshatra, different padas - dosha cancelled in most lineages. The key check is the pada number, not just the nakshatra name.

Condition 2: Same rashi, different nakshatra

If both partners share the same Moon sign (rashi) but are born under different nakshatras within that sign, the Nadi concern does not apply. This is condition 2 - and it is also widely accepted across most traditions.

Example: both partners have Taurus (Vrishabha) Moon. One is born under Krittika nakshatra, the other under Rohini. Same rashi, different nakshatra - cancellation applies. Note that same rashi AND same nakshatra is what creates the dosha in the first place, not what cancels it.

Condition 3: Nakshatra lords are the same planet

In the Vimshottari system, each nakshatra has a planetary lord (Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, or Venus). If both partners' birth nakshatras share the same ruling planet, the genetic compatibility concern is considered neutralized.

Example: one partner is born under Ashwini (lord Ketu) and the other under Magha (also lord Ketu). Different nakshatras, same lord - this condition applies. Verify using the Vimshottari nakshatra lord table.

Condition 4: Moon-sign lords are mutual friends

If the lords of both partners' rashis are mutual friends in the Parashari planetary friendship table, Nadi dosha is weakened to the point of cancellation. Planetary friendship is determined by the natural friendship relationships in Vedic astrology, not temporary or compound friendship.

Example: one partner has Aries Moon (lord Mars), the other has Leo Moon (lord Sun). Mars and Sun are natural friends - this condition applies. Partners with Cancer Moon (lord Moon) and Taurus Moon (lord Venus) would not qualify - Moon and Venus are not mutual friends in the Parashari table.

Condition 5: Strong benefic on the 7th house in both charts

If both charts have a strong, well-placed benefic planet - Jupiter or Venus - in or aspecting the 7th house (the marriage house), the adverse effects of Nadi dosha are considered neutralized. This is a secondary condition because it requires full chart reading.

It cannot be determined from nakshatra data alone. If you are relying on conditions 1-4 and none apply, this is the point at which a qualified astrologer needs to read both full charts.

Condition 6: Jupiter aspects the 7th house or its lord

Jupiter's aspect on the 7th house or the 7th lord in at least one chart is one of the most cited cancellation conditions in North Indian tradition. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses from its position - so this condition is triggered by Jupiter's placement rather than its conjunction.

Jupiter as the greatest benefic is seen as providing sufficient protection to override the Nadi concern. This condition is condition 6 rather than condition 1 because it still requires a full chart reading to verify Jupiter's placement and strength.

Condition 7: Nakshatra-specific exemptions in regional traditions

Certain nakshatras are recognized as exempt from Nadi dosha in specific Jyotish lineages. Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Shravan, Shatabhisha, and Uttarabhadra are commonly cited in some traditions as carrying special status that exempts them from the standard Nadi matching concern.

This condition is lineage-dependent. Not all pandits apply it. When in doubt, confirm with your family's astrologer rather than assuming it applies to your specific nakshatra combination.

Does one condition override all other concerns?

Cancellation removes the 8-point penalty. It does not guarantee the match works in every dimension.

A cancelled Nadi dosha means the specific genetic compatibility concern flagged by the koota system is not present. The rest of the chart - Gana, Yoni, Graha Maitri, family compatibility, dasha timing - still matters and should be read separately. Most pandits treat a cancelled Nadi as equivalent to a clean Nadi for scoring purposes. The score is adjusted upward in interpretation, even if the number on the page stays the same.

How to check which conditions apply to your charts

What you need: both partners' nakshatra names and pada numbers (from birth details), Moon signs, and Moon sign lords. Conditions 1 and 2 can be verified in under 2 minutes with just the nakshatra data. Conditions 3 and 4 need the Vimshottari lord table and the Parashari friendship table. Conditions 5-7 require a full chart reading by a qualified astrologer.

For scores below 18 where Nadi dosha is the most likely cause, conditions 1 and 2 are where to start. For borderline scores like 23/36, the same applies - Nadi cancellation is what determines whether the match is borderline-acceptable or genuinely workable.
