Kundli Matching — A Plain English Explanation

For families and parents who want to understand the process

May 2026

What is kundli matching?

A kundli is a birth chart - a map of where the planets were at the exact moment of your birth.

Kundli matching, also called gun milan or Ashtakoot matching, is a Vedic tradition of comparing two people's birth charts before marriage.

The comparison looks at 8 areas of compatibility and produces a score out of 36.

Families and astrologers use this score as one input in the marriage decision process.

It is a cultural tradition that many Indian families use. It is not a scientific guarantee of anything - but for families who practice it, it is an important part of the process.

The 8 areas (kootas) in plain English

The full match is built from eight separate areas. Together, they add up to 36 possible points.

  1. Varna (1 point) - How similar are their approaches to life and work.
  2. Vashya (2 points) - The natural dynamic between them, and who tends to lead.
  3. Tara (3 points) - How the relationship unfolds over time, based on birth stars.
  4. Yoni (4 points) - Physical and temperamental compatibility.
  5. Graha Maitri (5 points) - Friendship and mental compatibility between their ruling planets.
  6. Gana (6 points) - Temperament type: calm, balanced, or intense.
  7. Bhakoot (7 points) - Emotional, financial, and family compatibility between their moon signs.
  8. Nadi (8 points) - Constitutional and health compatibility.

What the score means

Score range
Typical reading
Under 18
Below traditional threshold. Most families want additional review before proceeding.
18 to 24
Acceptable. Most families proceed with this range. Some caution warranted.
25 to 32
Good match. Standard positive outcome.
33 to 36
Excellent. Rare.

The score by itself is not the only factor. Which areas scored low matters. Two different couples with 18/36 might have different concerns depending on where those points were lost.

What is a dosha?

A dosha is a specific flag in one area of the chart that indicates a potential concern.

The three most commonly discussed are Nadi dosha, Bhakoot dosha, and Manglik dosha.

A dosha flag is not a final answer - it is a starting point. Most doshas have cancellation conditions, which means there are specific circumstances where the concern is considered removed.

The important step is simple: always check whether cancellation applies before treating a dosha as confirmed.
