Score Interpretation
Got your Guna Milan score?
Here is what it actually means.
Sites like AstroSage and mPanchang show you a number out of 36. They rarely explain which specific kootas failed, whether any dosha is present, or what you can do about it. This page does.
Score ranges at a glance
The score is not the whole picture
Guna Milan measures 8 areas of compatibility (the kootas). But it does not account for Manglik Dosha, Nadi Dosha severity, planetary period alignment, or the specific houses Mars occupies in each chart. A couple with 28/36 but a full uncancelled Manglik Dosha is in a more difficult position than a couple with 22/36 and no doshas.
The free check below computes your actual Ashtakoot score from birth data and flags any doshas with cancellation conditions — so you know exactly where you stand.

Common questions about Guna Milan scores
My score is below 18. Can we still marry?+
Yes. The 18-point threshold is a guideline from Muhurta Chintamani, not an absolute rule. What matters more is which kootas failed and whether any dosha is present. Many successful marriages have Gun Milan scores of 14-17 with strong individual charts. Check your specific weak kootas before deciding anything.
Different sites gave me different scores. Which is correct?+
Differences usually come from three sources: which ayanamsa was used (Lahiri vs Raman vs Krishnamurti), whether the system checks from Lagna only or from Moon sign, and how half-point kootas are handled. Our calculation uses Lahiri ayanamsa with Swiss Ephemeris — the standard used by most professional Jyotish software in India.
A high score means a good marriage, right?+
Not necessarily. Gun Milan scores compatibility on 8 dimensions of temperament, health, and family dynamics. It does not measure character, maturity, communication, or financial compatibility. Some couples with 32/36 have difficult marriages; some with 16/36 have very stable ones. The score is one data point, not a prediction.
What is more important — score or doshas?+
Most experienced Vedic astrologers consider doshas more significant than the total score. A 26/36 with full uncancelled Nadi Dosha is treated more seriously than a 20/36 with no doshas. Check your doshas first, then evaluate the score in that context.
