Bhakoot Dosha Cancellation Rules — When Is It Overridden?

Bhakoot dosha is cancelled when the Moon sign lords of both partners are the same planet, mutual friends, or when one is exalted in the sign it occupies. These are the primary overrides in classical Jyotish. The dosha is also absent when both partners share the same Moon sign.

Unlike Nadi dosha (where cancellation depends on Nakshatra pada and requires precise birth time), Bhakoot dosha cancellation can sometimes be confirmed from Moon sign alone. That makes it slightly easier to check quickly. But the same caution applies: do not skip the cancellation check just because the dosha is present.

What triggers Bhakoot dosha

Bhakoot dosha appears when both partners' Moon signs fall in a 6-8 or 2-12 relationship to each other. The count goes in both directions: from the woman's Rashi to the man's, and from the man's Rashi to the woman's.

6-8 relationship: the Moon signs are six and eight signs apart. This is classically associated with health friction and family conflict.

2-12 relationship: the Moon signs are two and twelve signs apart. This is associated with financial instability and emotional distance over time.

Cancellation conditions: when Bhakoot dosha is overridden

Condition 1: Same Moon sign lord (most reliable cancellation)

If both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet, the hostile relationship between the signs is substantially softened. Example: Taurus and Libra are both ruled by Venus. A Taurus-Libra pairing technically has a 6-8 Moon sign relationship, but since both lords are Venus, classical tradition treats the dosha as cancelled or neutralized.

This is the most decisive cancellation rule for Bhakoot. It can be confirmed from Moon sign alone, without detailed chart computation.

Condition 2: Moon sign lords are mutual friends

When the ruling planets of both Moon signs are naturally friendly to each other, the hostile Bhakoot energy is mitigated. Sun and Mars are friends. Moon and Jupiter are friends. Mercury and Venus are friends. A pairing where both Moon sign lords are mutually friendly reduces the friction that Bhakoot predicts.

This is a partial cancellation in most lineages, not a full override. Astrologers use it alongside other chart indicators rather than as a standalone pass.

Condition 3: One Moon sign lord is exalted or in its own sign

A planet in exaltation or own sign has strong dignity. When one partner's Moon sign lord is exalted, that lord's strength is treated as partially compensating for the Bhakoot friction. This condition appears in South Indian Jyotish traditions more prominently than North Indian ones.

Condition 4: Both partners in the same Nakshatra

Shared Nakshatra is treated as a strong binding indicator in some lineages, enough to offset Bhakoot concern. This applies when both partners' Moon Nakshatras are identical. It is less common than the lord-based cancellations above.

Bhakoot dosha vs Nadi dosha: which is more serious?

In classical point weighting, Nadi carries 8 points and Bhakoot carries 7. Most traditional astrologers treat Nadi dosha as the more serious of the two because its classical concern (biological and progeny compatibility) is considered a deeper marker than Bhakoot's financial and family discord associations.

Bhakoot dosha also has more cancellation pathways. When the Moon sign lord condition applies (same lord or friendly lords), many astrologers are comfortable proceeding. Nadi dosha cancellation requires more specific birth data and chart verification.

Both at zero together is a different situation. A 15-point deficit from Nadi plus Bhakoot both scoring zero is significant, and most astrologers would want full individual chart review before approving.
