Tara is calculated by counting from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's and dividing by 9. The remainder determines the 'tara' (star) type. Stars 1, 3, 5, 7 are auspicious (Janma, Vipat, Pratyari, Naidhana are inauspicious). Full 3 points for auspicious tara from both sides. 1.5 points if only one direction is auspicious. 0 if both are inauspicious.

The important nakshatras to avoid are Vipat (3rd), Pratyari (5th), and Naidhana (7th) taras, which are associated with obstacles and danger.
